Summary of Work
The State of North Dakota is undergoing a dynamic transformation of it energy sector. Located in the heart of the Bakken formation, North Dakota has become an epicenter of oil and gas activity in the U.S. In addition to conventional energy resources, North Dakota is a leading state in the development of alternative and renewable resources. Over 1,600 MW of wind power have been developed in-state in the last decade, making North Dakota one of the nation''s largest wind producers, both as a percentage of power produced and in absolute terms. These new resources are in addition to North Dakota''s already substantial network of mine-mouth coal fired base load generation facilities.
Much of the regulatory work generated by this activity is handled by the North Dakota PSC. During summer 2014, the Commission expects to see a heavy caseload related to both economic regulation and infrastructure permitting. Energy conversation and transmission facility siting cases continue to be substantial portion of the Commission''s caseload. These include electric transmission line expansion, wind farm development, and pipeline and gas plant infrastructure development due to oil and gas activity and a growing economy throughout the state.
The North Dakota Public Service Commission has broad jurisdiction in a state experiencing substantial economic development in the energy industry. The Commission''s role in that development includes coal mining, public utility regulation and environmental siting for energy infrastructure. This offers potential interns the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in a well-respected regulatory agency on cases and projects that are directly related to important national policy issues, including environmental regulation, energy development, and expansion and stabilization of the electric grid.
The Intern will work with the Commission's attorneys as well as Commissioners, division directors and technical staff. Preference will be given to second year law students with a strong interest in energy, agricultural, or environmental law. Some travel may be required and travel expenses will be reimbursed at the state employee rate.
Equal Employment Opportunity
The State of North Dakota and this hiring agency do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, genetics, religion, age or disability in employment or the provisions of services and complies with the provisions of the North Dakota Human Rights Act.
As an employer, the State of North Dakota prohibits smoking in all places of state employment in accordance with N.D.C.C. 23-12-10.
