Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a technical field (CIS, CS etc) or other directly related degree and four years of current, progressive_ and varied work experience in a medium to large-sized, enterprise-level computing environment, as detailed below. Additional work experience as described may substitute for up to two years of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. _
Applicant's varied and extensive data center and systems administrator work experience will provide the requisite in depth of knowledge, skills and abilities needed to join the Architecture team. For example: a broad technical understanding of the following extensive subset of technologies and infrastructures: Storage Area Networks, Internet Protocol Networking, System Administration, Database Administration, Server Virtualization, Disaster Recovery, Backup and Recovery, Data Center Management and Service Oriented Architecture. Extensive experience with one or more of the following operating systems: Windows Server, Linux, AIX, z/OS. Application programming skills and/or scripting skills are also required.
Successful candidate must possess strong oral and written communication skills; critical thinking and analysis skills needed to analyze data and reach conclusions; and strong interpersonal skills needed to build relations with vendors, customers and co-workers. Candidate must also be able to understand how a customer or ITD business problem translates it into a technology solution; possess an ability to work with business (vs. technical) people in a collaborative design environment, as well as be able to translate technical information in a non-technical business manner.

Duties and Tasks
Design the hosting infrastructure of highly available server solutions in ITD's two data centers, including, Capacity Planning, Security, Disaster Recovery Planning, Business Continuity Planning.
Design oversight for ITD's Storage infrastructure, Server Platforms, Server Virtualization and Operating Systems and Database and Web application infrastructures.
Design cloud infrastructure services including servers, storage, virtualization models, component infrastructure, networks, security, and the physical facilities that support the applications and business processes.
Establish and document conceptual, logical, and physical architecture designs for cloud services and service components.
Work in concert with ITD's Software, Security, and Network Architecture groups regarding enterprise-wide architectural decisions in order to assure that the state's IT infrastructure meets the needs of ITD's customers, is cost-effective and complies with ITD's Enterprise Architectural technology policies and standards.
Individual will assist with determining the general impact of changes within the industry and specific impact to the State's architecture.
Communicate changes to entities affected.
Participate in establishing standards and policies related to the support and operations of the Computer Systems Division.
Write and review requests for proposals and assist in proofs of concept for proposals and evaluations.
Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, etc., to advise the chief architect and/or management staff regarding technical and conceptual aspects.
Assist with providing oversight and guidance to the various entities that develop and maintain the infrastructure.
Review short-term and long-term user business and information technology plans; provide users with information to develop plans and advise of forthcoming technology.
Provide alternative uses of technology when feasible to ensure cost effectiveness and/or optimization of resources.
Responsible for managing highly technical issues, performing troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
Research highly technical subjects and write white papers.
Summary of Work
The Information Technology Dept. (ITD), located in Bismarck North Dakota, is a full service provider of IT services for State Governmental Agencies. This Architect position will assist fellow architects from across the organization to develop and maintain the architecture and strategy of an enterprise-wide information technology function. This position will take direction primarily from the Computer Systems Division Director and the Chief Systems Architect.
As a member of the Computer Systems Architecture group, this position will assist with planning strategic direction for: SAN design and Business Continuity solutions, Capacity Planning, Server Virtualization, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) infrastructure, Cloud infrastructure, Server/Application monitoring and Database infrastructure. This position will also work within the cloud architecture to evaluate and design efficient solutions for cloud computing.
