The Staff Archaeologist will be responsible for supervising and leading small field crews during survey, testing, and data recovery.
You will communicate with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports.
The Staff Archaeologist will participate in technical research and writing and data QA/QC for reporting efforts, and assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using tablets and/or Trimble Units.

This position is a regular, hourly position offering a competitive pay and benefits package.
Project work will occur primarily in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, although opportunities to work in other states may also arise.
You should be able to work flexible hours with the potential for long-term field mobilizations for specific projects.
Per diem and lodging are provided for all project work requiring overnight stays away from the home office.
What you will accomplishConduct archaeological fieldwork under the direction of a Project Manager or Field Director on projects including monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.

Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts accurately.
Conduct archaeological survey, excavation, and associated field recording, including completion of field forms, digital photography, and in-field mapping.
Gain experience with our rapidly developing tablet-based GPS and forms interfaces, along with web-based portals displaying project information.
Conduct archaeological lab work, including artifact washing, analysis, and curation preparation.
Use SWCA-provided personal protective equipment and comply with all SWCA and client safety policies.

Experience and qualifications for successMinimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field required.
Master's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field is preferred.
A minimum of four (4) years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required; experience in the Northern Plains preferred.
Previous field supervisory experience requiredCompleted accredited field school experience is highly preferredAbility to be listed on federal and state cultural resource permits in North Dakota and MinnesotaKnowledge of ArcGIS Collector is a plus.
Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.
Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
Willing to travel overnight for extended periods of time.
Travel outside of the Dakotas/Minnesota area is expected to be 50 to 75%.
