Hiring Salary Range: $3,675/month
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences with emphasis in biology, natural resources management, hydrology or environmental science, and one year of related experience. A master's degree in a related field may substitute for the work experience requirement. Individuals should have effective written and oral communication skills, computer skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Applicants must have a valid driver's license or the ability to travel throughout North Dakota.
If unable to find qualified candidates, the Department will consider under-filling the position as an Environmental Scientist I, which requires a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in natural resources management, biology, hydrology or environmental science.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to individuals with experience in hydrology, water quality monitoring, water quality modeling, nonpoint source pollution and/or watershed planning. Overnight travel within North Dakota is required. Out-of-state travel for training or meetings may occur occasionally.

Summary of Work
The Environmental Health Section has an Environmental Scientist II opening in the Division of Water Quality. The primary responsibilities of the Division of Water Quality- Surface Water Quality Management Program position are to:
Coordinate and assist in the development of basin wide water quality assessment reports, including compiling existing basin water quality data and associated information, facilitating the development of basin advisory groups, facilitating and coordinating basin advisory stakeholder meetings, and coordinating basin planning with local agencies (e.g., soil conservation districts, water resource boards), agricultural organizations, industry, academic institutions, municipalities, and other state and federal resource management agencies.
Coordinate and assist in the development of basin wide water quality management plans, including facilitating the development of basin advisory groups, facilitating and coordinating basin advisory stakeholder meetings, and coordinating basin planning with local agencies (e.g., soil conservation districts, water resource boards), agricultural organizations, industry, academic institutions, municipalities, and other state and federal resource management agencies.
Coordinate and assist in the development and implementation of basin monitoring and assessment plans.
Serve as a regional liaison between the Department's Division of Water Quality and landowners, soil conservation districts, local watershed advisory groups, water resource boards, agricultural organizations, industry, academic institutions, municipalities, and other state and federal resource management agencies.
Develop Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), including the design and development of monitoring plans for the collection of water quality data, the analysis of monitoringdata and preparation of TMDLs for submittal and approval by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Coordinate and assist in the development of Section 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Management Program Assessment Projects and Project Implementation Plans (PIPs).
Assist in the development and implementation of the state's nutrient reduction strategy.
Assist Surface Water Quality Management Program staff in water quality monitoring projects for lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams and wetlands.
Assist local soil conservation districts and other community groups in the delivery of water quality and environmental education programs.
Respond to pollution incidents (e.g., spills, fish kills) and complaints, as needed.
Field work with overnight travel is a significant part of this position and can occur during any time of the year. Fieldwork may require working in physically demanding situations (e.g., heat, cold, flowing streams, rain and wind), the moving of heavy objects and the operation of specialized sampling equipment (e.g., sampling pumps, meters, fish electro-shocking equipment, boats, four-wheelers and/or snowmobiles).
